The Alterations Process

Now you have chosen the dress of your dreams the alterations and fitting process is essential to make sure you achieve the perfect fit for your big day.

How many fittings

For most brides two fittings are enough, unless you need the dress completely downsizing any re-design or bespoke alterations then an interim fitting may be required. Please feel free to bring someone with you to share the experience

When to start the fittings

Approximately 2 to 3 months before your wedding day is a rough guide. Factors to consider are any bespoke alterations needed and any weight changes. I can advise you on your individual circumstances and needs. It’s always best to book in as soon as you have purchased your dress as during peak season I can be very busy.

First fitting

On your first fitting you’ll be welcomed into my light spacious studio where you will you have a one-to-one fitting in complete privacy. During the first fitting we will discuss any requests or concerns you have.  I will look at the fit of the dress and offer you my expert advice. I will then pin the dress to achieve the best possible fit and take measurements needed for any bespoke alterations. My aim is to make you feel as confident and comfortable as possible and ensure you look your absolute best.  We will discuss and agree on all the alterations to be completed, before any work is undertaken. You should allow up to an hour for your first dress fitting.

What to bring

You need to bring your dress, shoes and undergarments such as bra petticoats or shapewear. I have a small selection of petticoats and hoops if you’re still undecided about these. I also have a selection of bridal bra cups in all cup sizes that can be stitched into the dress instead of wearing a bra. These work particularly well with strapless, low back and illusion back dresses where bra straps can be seen.

Final fitting

All the alterations will now be completed and you will try the dress on for the last time. It is helpful for the person dressing you on the day to be present. I will show your guest how to dress you offering  valuable top tips and special techniques to help you on the day and take you through how to bustle up the train in the evening for dancing etc. You will have a walk around and sit down to really get a feel of your newly fitted wedding dress. At the end of this fitting payment is taken and you will take your dress away with you.

Weight change

Firstly please don’t be tempted to buy a dress much smaller with a view to losing weight it puts you under a lot of unnecessary pressure, it’s much easier to take a dress in than to let it out. If you’re planning to lose weight we can factor that into the timings of your dress fittings. Most dresses can be taken down by two sizes but  they may require a little bit more time for the alterations to be completed.

Cost

The cost of alterations will depend on what you need and the style and design of the dress. Don’t be tempted to compromise on alterations, you have invested in a beautiful dress so you need a skilled and experienced professional to complete your alterations. Alterations should be budgeted into your wedding dress cost from the start as it’s vital to achieving the perfect fit. The more complex or intricate your dress such as lace and beading the more alterations can cost.

Most but not all dresses require hem and bodice alterations and some brides like to add bustling, bra cups, belts, straps, beading, appliqués, neckline changes, train reductions or even zip opening to corset back conversions. For any extras you should allow extra for the final cost.

The average cost of basic alterations is £250.00, however a clear estimate to meet your unique requirements will be provided at the time of the first fitting and before any work is undertaken.
